Throttle systems of internal combustion engines were simple in the past—a physical cable used to connect the gas pedal to the throttle body. How much you pressed the pedal meant how much the valve would open, giving you an instant throttle feel and power as much as you intended.

Modern internal combustion engines utilise an electronic throttle control system instead of the physical cable. ETC systems take the signal from the throttle position sensor and process it before sending it to the ECU. Then the ECU tells the throttle valve how much it should open. This whole process causes a delay between the moment you press the accelerator and the moment the engine starts to rev. 

This delay is called “throttle lag.” The lag is deliberately left there by the manufacturers to meet certain emissions standards and as a safety measure for their motor vehicles to appeal to a broader customer base. Some people may not need such precautions, but an unresponsive throttle pedal frustrates many drivers.

The Pedal Commander throttle response controller alters the signal from the throttle positioning sensor before sending it to the ECU. The altered signal eliminates the throttle lag as much as possible, and the new, modified signal mimics the physical cable throttle assemblies of the past.
