That’s where the Pedal Commander® throttle response controller comes in. It connects to the accelerator pedal and uses custom software to eliminate throttle lag, giving you instant and smooth power delivery every time you press the pedal. With four driving modes (Eco, City, Sport, and Sport+) and 36 adjustable settings, you can fine-tune the response to suit your style. WHAT IS THROTTLE LAG?

The Toyota GR86 is a fantastic driver’s car, but it is notorious for throttle lag. Owners cannot stop complaining about the delayed throttle response. All modern cars use a drive-by-wire throttle. It replaces the old-school mechanical gas pedal connection with sensors and actuators controlled by the factory ECU. The stock throttle tune is intentionally delayed to meet EPA regulations and to make the cars suitable for a wide range of drivers. However, in a sports car like the GR86, throttle lag is a huge drawback.

You can fix your GR86 throttle lag with the Pedal Commander® throttle response controller. It remaps the pedal position signal to eliminate throttle lag and gives you 4 modes and 36 settings to configure throttle sensitivity however you want.

The basic steps of the Pedal Commander® installation are always the same regardless of the vehicle's make and model:

Turn off the ignition and wait 10-15 minutes with your driver's door open to allow your ECU to shut down.

Disconnect your accelerator pedal assembly plug, then plug in the heads to connectors on the Pedal Commander® harness.

Clean up the area where you want to mount the control unit with the alcohol wipe. Stick the bracket with the supplied velcro.

After you make sure the cables are secure and won't be tangled, you are ready to enjoy Pedal Commander®.

I thought it was going to be a gimmick, not really do much. I was wrong! The different modes make a night and day difference on the throttle input. My shifts are smoother on all modes. In sport mode the sensitivity makes it easy to blip the throttle while downshifting. I love it.

The new GR86/BRZ platform is known to have a particularly over-sprung clutch feel, making clutching out at a stop or shifting between gears a bit numb. The problem is made worse by the poor throttle mapping from factory. The 1st inch of accelerator pedal is dead and then quickly feels like a on/off switch, making a smooth shift with throttle-on challenging. Although Pedal Commander cannot fix a mechanical clutch it does dial in the pedal feel of the accelerator and in turn makes the clutch experience much better. I still will install an aftermarket clutch spring but Pedal Commander is an impressive upgrade over factory throttle mapping. A lot of fun to play with the setting and finding the perfect balance for your specific driving traits. I really like City -4 for daily commuting and even spirited driving. Feels like what factory should have tuned the throttle map to. Highly recommend Pedal Commander.

I have a 2023 Manual Premium GR86. Although I had to remove the accelerator assembly, ( no fault of Pedal Commander) because I couldn't disconnect the stock connector to insert the new one because of limited space. The install and setup were otherwise a breeze! The PC does just as it says. It gives more or less throttle (per setting) than you are actually applying. Thus giving more (or less) response to your accelerator inputs. My only wish is that there was a slight bit more adjustability per setting. I run "City" minus 4. I wish there was a setting slightly less than this as it is still a bit jumpy for me on my manual. All in all I like the product. And feel it is a good value for the money.
